    What is Thyroid Cancer?
{image010.jpg} The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland at the front of the neck. It produces hormones which are important in regulation of metabolism in the body. It has two parts, or lobes. Thyroid cancer is triggered by the rapid development of cancer cells around the area of the thyroid gland. That causes a malignant tumor which causes thyroid cancer.

    Diagnosis and Treatment
Biopsy is the most effective method to find out if a thyroid lump is cancerous.
The most common treatment for thyroid cancer is surgery.
Other treatments include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and radioactive iodine tretment.
    Other Facts
    - There are four major types of thyroid cancer: papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic.
    - It is three times more common in women than in men.
    - It is impossible to prevent most cases of thyroid cancer.
    - A swollen thyroid is called a goiter, which is caused by lack of iodine in the diet.
    - The thyroid gland has two kinds of cells: follicular and C cells. Follicular cells produce thyroid hormone that affects heart ratee, body temperature, and energy level. C cells produce calcitonin which controls level of calcium in the blood.
    - Prognosis depends on type of thyroid cancer, age, and whether cancer has spread.
